Kane | Escanaba Michigan Newborn Photo Session
Kane’s mom is a fellow nurse who now works in our hospital’s ED. She operates a little business called Reprize Designs that makes super cute farmhouse-inspired decor – I’ve purchased several items from her over the years and have loved every one of them. She’s a hustler and a sweetheart, and when I saw her post on Reprize’s facebook page that she would have an indefinite hiatus, I knew something was up.
Kane’s mom ended up being hospitalized for the last month of her pregnancy, fighting to keep Kane on the inside a little longer, and fighting to keep her body alive to do so. They spent both Christmas and New Year in the hospital. Kane made it to 32 weeks, his mom had a successful healthy delivery, and they are both thriving now. When I met Kane, he’d been earthside for just about a month, and still wasn’t actually “due” to arrive for another month! He was a little peanut at just under 6 lbs – it always amazes me how much a pound or two makes a difference on these little guys – and slept amazingly for his session. The strength and resilience of his parents amazes me – I know that he was given to them for a reason, they are more than strong enough to handle everything thrown at them.
Kane’s mom has a love for cool neutrals – I always have to fight my warm neutral tendencies when styling these types of sessions! I did throw in some deep greens – I figured his mom would be ok with this, seeing some of his outfits on social media, and I figured right – and also some creams, but mostly we stuck to whites, and light and dark grays. He loved being cozy and curled up but wasn’t much for being unwrapped, so we let him make the rules. We also did the traditional parent poses, but also included more lifestyle poses in the bed area of my studio, and I absolutely loved the outcome. I think I may start giving parents the choice for which they prefer – I know I have a hard time choosing my favorite! Another interesting fact is that the little basket he’s wrapped up in for the green setup, is a basket I’ve never been able to use for photos before – it’s too little usually! Kane fit just right into it.
