Emma, spring inspired newborn session

I first photographed this family way back when my studio was a spare room in our basement. I’ve since moved into my studio (6 years this year!) and they have moved downstate – but I’ve still photographed newborn and milestone photos for their children. It’s an honor that they plan trips to the upper peninsula just for photo sessions – and I give mom SO much credit for making the trek with a newborn baby and 2 siblings!

I love making the studio a comfortable place for not only babies, but their parents too. That new-parent life is a bit chaotic – whether it’s your first baby or your third, there’s a lot of adjusting to do. The newborn session is a time to not only create beautiful images of this amazing new life you’ve brought into the world, but a time for parents to just pause and take a breath. Soak in everything you’ve gone through the past few weeks. Relax knowing that your baby is close by and within sight, but in good hands, and take that time for yourself. I love getting to know my clients and making conversation, but I’m also super content listening to music and being in my photography-zone. Whatever energy you need, I’m there for.

This particular mom became a little teary during the session. This was her third baby, so she knew all the stages to expect, but she also knew it was her last baby. She said, “She’s just so little, and I know she won’t be that way for long. She’s my last baby, and they say with your last child that all of her firsts, are your lasts. I didn’t know how much I wanted her till she was here.”

It was a moment that reminded me why I love photography – both for connecting with clients in such a way, but also being able to give them these moments to come back to, time and again, year after year. It’s an honor, each and every time.

Mom gave me free rein with styling this session and I kept mostly to the creams and light pinks inspired by the upcoming spring.
